Having a great outdoor patio is more than just throwing some chairs and an umbrella in the backyard. Plan your patio living area, and it can become not only gorgeous, but extra space for you, your family, and your guests to enjoy. Like having additional rooms in your home.
Failing to Plan = Planning to Fail
- Plan your space – what do you want the area to be used for? Fun parties? Relaxing, quiet zone? Your new outdoor living space may be a bit of all that.
- Take measurements – what’s your square footage? Do a rough diagram. You don’t have to be Picasso, just sketch out the general layout and measurements.
- Decide how you will use each area – lounging, dining, storage, reading, etc.
Use the shape of the furniture to maximize space. An example, round dining tables are good on a round deck because they don’t leave corners that go unused. Square or rectangular tables can even out odd-shaped spaces. Bistro-style chairs tend to save more space than rectangular chairs. For small get-togethers, stow the extra chairs along the wall to open space.
Umbrellas Extend Space
Use patio umbrellas to create separate zones, for sitting, reading, relaxing.
